Hello bookworms,
I'm super excited to be writing my first book review, especially on a book that I love and care so much about. Today I will be reviewing the novel 13 reasons why by Jay Asher.
I'm super excited to be writing my first book review, especially on a book that I love and care so much about. Today I will be reviewing the novel 13 reasons why by Jay Asher.
Now, this is one of the first contemporary novel that I have read in years (I kinda got wrapped up in fantasy and paranormal romance), but I don't believe its going to be the last! 13 reasons why is about a boy named Clay Jensen, who gets a packaged at the beginning of the story from a girl named
Hannah Baker, who killed herself a week before. She left behind 13 tapes giving people 13 reasons why she killed herself.
This amazingly heart felt novel is so sadly tragic. It stirs up so many emotions all at one time that you feel bi-polar as your reading this. One minute I wanted to be sad and cry, then the next I wanted to be angry and punch a wall, and then the next I want to be happy and laugh. I also just loved the way this novel was written. I feel like even though we were in the perspective of Clay, you really got to know Hannah through her tapes and Clay through his thoughts. Which, in the end, bumped up the emotions in the overall story because you got attached to both characters. The story goes through the 13
reasons individually, so you start off by only getting a snippet of the overall story and don't know it fully til the very end. This adds mystery and suspense to the story that I don't usually enjoy, but I found myself actually enjoying it in this novel because it was very interesting see how each person's actions, no
matter how small, added or subtracted from her reasoning to commit suicide.
This novel really explains how all your actions have a reaction and you have to be mindful of how you treat others. The overall lesson in this book is divided into 3 major ones. 1) Don't let what others think of you or that idea of "image" effect the way you act or what you do. Sure. there is a time and place for certain things, but opportunities have a shelf-life so don't let them pass you by. 2) Don't be afraid to ask for help. If Hannah would have asked for help instead of waiting for someone to notice-- she might have worked things out and still be alive today. Don't let a silly thing like pride or fear determine
your life or death, literally. 3) Finally, be mindful of the way you treat others. No matter how big or small, you can make a huge impact, positive or negative, in someone's life. For every action, there is a reaction. I hope this review encourages you to go read the book. There has been
confirmation that a movie is in the works based on this book. There isn't a set date, but hopefully when it does come out you guys will all go see it. Maybe I'll do a review on it, we'll see! Don't forget to follow and support!
